When thinking of the most iconic Scottish image, first thing that comes to mind is a majestic stag on a backdrop of beautiful rugged mountains. But what about a whole herd of deer casually resting undisturbed in a meadow, on a wintry morning?

Glen Etive is probably the best known for its stunning landscape, with Buachaille Etive Mor and its lower sibling, Buachaille Etive Beag, towering at the northern end (both present on this photograph), and crystal clear Loch Etive taking up the opposite end. The magical Glen Etive is also known to be a home to a countless red deer population, these beautiful wild animals are not especially shy when it comes to human contact, as they would carefully investigate any newcomer for apples and carrots.

I took this photograph on a frosty wintry morning while exploring Glen Etive. I didn’t expect to come across dozens of small groups of deer at every corner while driving to Loch Etive, but there they were, and seemed to be curious of humans and totally not bothered by close contact.
That first time I was totally unprepared to find numerous hungry deer, but since then I learned to always have carrots and apples when heading to Glen Etive. Winter in Scottish Highlands can be harsh, with wildlife struggling to find enough food.
